60 years·The Gleneagles Story

The first Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore occupies the original site of Harvestehude, a house named after a place in Germany, which was built in the early 1900s by German resident Gustav C W Wolber.

During the late 1930s, the house was taken over by two British ladies who converted it into a boarding house named Gleneagles, after the lush surroundings and wilderness of a beautiful Scottish valley.

In the 1950s, a luxury hotel called Gleneagles Hotel was built next to Harvestehude but it was used as a hospital in 1958 by the British European Association.

First opening its doors to the public in June 1959, it sat opposite the Singapore Botanic Gardens, providing the ideal healing environment for patients. With empathy and superior care being at the heart of Gleneagles from the beginning, it furthered its healing mission in 1978, redeveloping staff quarters  into a 5-storey medical block.

In 1987, the hospital was acquired by Parkway Holdings, who invested S$150m to add a hospital block, operating facilities and consultation suites, and transformed Gleneagles into a modern medical facility. The hospital also expanded its range of services to include hospital management and consultancy services. By 1997, Gleneagles had developed into a 380-bed tertiary care hospital with 150 medical specialists.

Today, Gleneagles Hospital has grown into a renowned tertiary acute care hospital which provides a wide range of medical and surgical services for the total management of patients. It is highly regarded for clinical expertise in a variety of disciplines. State-of-the-art facilities and medical equipment, as well as the latest communication and information technology, also back the 257-bed hospital facility that specializes in cardiology, gastroenterology, liver transplant, obstetrics and gynaecology, oncology and orthopaedics.

Gleneagles Global

Gleneagles Hospital’s strong reputation and impeccable track record in both clinical outcomes and customer service have also made Gleneagles a much sought-after brand name over its competitors in Singapore and abroad. Such strong brand recognition for Gleneagles outside of Singapore has attracted many patients and contributed immensely to the success of these hospitals across the region. The high value creation, trust and brand loyalty among its customers were also critical in helping the brand win several local and regional awards for service excellence and brand recognition.
